Subcutaneous Levetiracetam Application Sustains Therapeutic Drug Levels

چکیده
We report on a patient suffering from seizures caused by cerebral metastases of adenocarcinoma the lung. Initially, was treated effectively with oral levetiracetam. As disease progressed, intake no longer possible. Since levetiracetam had controlled patient's well, medication delivery mode switched first to intravenous application, followed return administration. After further deterioration, subcutaneous application used control epileptic symptoms while avoiding sedating effects midazolam. Subcutaneous allowed for stable seizure in end-of-life situation. Serum levels were assessed all conditions and demonstrate that therapeutic drug can be reached application. This tertiary care center Switzerland adds sparse but growing evidence base use manage palliative care.

متن کاملTherapeutic drug monitoring of levetiracetam: comparison of a novel immunoassay with an HPLC method.
BACKGROUND Therapeutic drug monitoring of the anticonvulsant levetiracetam may be indicated in patients with conditions that may alter pharmacokinetic characteristics, for tailoring individual dosage regimens or to investigate patient compliance. In this study, the Bio-Rad high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method (in-use method) and the ARK immunoassay method (new method) for leveti...
متن کاملLevetiracetam in submaximal subcutaneous pentylentetrazol-induced seizures in rats
Despite anticonvulsant efficacy in animal models of generalized epilepsy, levetiracetam was not effective in the maximal subcutaneous PTZ model in mice and rats. Aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of levetiracetam (LEV) against submaximal, s.c. MET test (PTZ at the dose of 70 mg/kg) acute seizures in Wistar rats, in comparison to valproic acid (VPA). Thirty male Wistar rats (P42) were...
متن کاملValue of therapeutic drug level monitoring and unbound (free) levels
Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) has declined with newer anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) having no therapeutic window. Use of unbound (free) fraction has almost completely disappeared. The case reported highlights its importance and offers sound reason for its retention. A 66-year-old Caucasian man with known epilepsy was admitted with vomiting, ataxia and nystagmus presumably due to AED toxicity....
متن کاملLevetiracetam.
Levetiracetam (LEV) is a novel antiepileptic drug (AED) which was discovered in early 1980s and soon, in 1999 FDA approved LEV for the management of partial onset seizure. In India, LEV tablet was approved in April 2005. It acts by binding to the synaptic vesicle protein SV2A, which is present on synaptic vesicles and some neuroendocrine cells. Pharmacokinetics of LEV such as, less protein bind...
